Historical nginx 1.28.0 fixture: failed connection recorded as 502, successful backup attempt 200, and one final client response 200.

An access log separates client outcomes from upstream attempts

An nginx access log records request information when logging runs at the end of processing. The selected fields can distinguish what the client requested, which URI ultimately handled it, what response was sent, and what happened during upstream attempts. Keep these observations separate: one status, duration, or path cannot explain the whole request. ...

Three spans share a trace and two parent links: request, outbound, handle/ok. A second request without a propagation header starts a separate handle/fail root. Connection and failure status are different questions.

Traces connect the recorded parts of a request

A distributed trace connects recorded operations through a shared trace identifier and explicit relationships. A span represents one operation, with start and end timestamps, attributes, events, and status. This makes a trace useful when a checkout request crosses an application, an inventory service, and a payment service. The resulting picture depends on which operations were instrumented, retained, and exported; it is not an automatic inventory of every action the request performed. ...

The same input, 250 milliseconds, takes two paths. Dividing by 1000 yields 0.250 seconds; changing only the suffix leaves 250, incorrectly interpreted as seconds. The upper conversion path and lower rename-only path stay visibly distinct.

Put the unit in the metric name

A metric named request_duration leaves readers guessing whether 250 means seconds, milliseconds, or something else. A Prometheus-facing name such as http_request_duration_seconds carries that contract into queries, recording rules, and alerts. The contract still needs a correct implementation. Appending _seconds to measurements collected in milliseconds changes the spelling, not the magnitude, and can create a thousandfold monitoring error. ...

A single response record is bounded by URL, representation, vantage point and time. Beside it, many observations form an aggregate trend whose provenance links back to the raw records.
